One thing I love about blogs is the way they connect people. Different countries and cultures share interests and experiences via blogs. For example in the food blogging community there are a whole series of events, where participants cook and photograph food, all based around a theme. One of these food blogging events is called the Spice is Right and it’s hosted by Barbara at Tigers&Strawberries. The latest theme ingredient is chillies and this is my entry. Chillies are …
Zucchini fritters
Posted by kathryn in Eggs, Dinners, Spring, Summer, Vegetables and Recipes
Fritters are a great way to make vegetables a bit different. If you struggle to get your daily vegetable quota, or find it impossible to get your kids to eat vegies, then fritters are a good option. They don’t really look or taste like vegetables and don’t have an obvious vegetable texture. They can be “sold” to kids as burgers, something all kids recognise (certainly in Australia). Fritters are also quick and easy to cook – grate some vegetables; …
December: what's in season?
Posted by kathryn in Summer
December is here already, which means we’re well into the summer fruit season. Bananas are definitely coming down in price, while they seem to be averaging $8.99 – $9.99 a kilo, I did buy some for $4.99 / kg last week! Anyway here is the list of the fruit and vegetables that are in season in December: h3. Fruit: * Apricots (down to $3.99 / kilo in my local shop) * Avocadoes * Bananas (expect them to "continue coming down …

Balsamic, tomato & goat's cheese bites
Posted by kathryn in Snacks, Summer, Salads and Recipes
Now to the dinner party recipes. I knew everyone would be hungry when they arrived, having come directly from work, so I thought a couple of canapes would be a good idea – just enough to take the edge off the hunger. These little morsels worked well. They’re adapted from a Donna Hay recipe (issue 21 of her magazine) – I’ve changed the quantities around and used goat’s cheese instead of bocconcini. I made the pitta rounds and balsamic …
Mini herb frittatas with onion marmalade
Posted by kathryn in Eggs, Snacks, Recipes and Summer
While the photo is not brilliant, these were really good – little bite sized morsels packed full of flavour. At one point I thought there was going to be a fight over the last three – good manners won out in the end, but there was a fair bit of “well I’ve only had one, how many have you had?” going on. While fights can spoil the mood of any dinner party, it is lovely when your guests enjoy …

Rocket, corn & zucchini salad
Posted by kathryn in Salads, Summer and Recipes
This recipe is adapted from the December/January Delicious magazine. Corn is in season at the moment and beautifully juicy. Corn is also a good source of the antioxidant lutein, which is important for eye health and preventing macular degeneration. h3. Rocket, corn & zucchini salad I made this for my dinner party , so quantities below are for 12 people as a side dish. You could also add some lima beans and fetta cheese, to make it more of …
Berry and mango pavlova
Posted by kathryn in Desserts, Summer and Recipes
I’ve got a few unfinished blogging strands at the moment, including the dessert from this dinner party. I rarely make desserts, so far there are only three posts in my pudding category and at home we generally stick to the trusty fruit and yoghurt combination. For a dinner party though, I like to do something special, a little bit decadent even, but without tripling everyone’s saturated fat intake. This berry and mango pavlova fits the bill. It’s adapted from …
Hot weather and rice paper rolls
Posted by kathryn in Vegan, Dinners and Summer
When the hot weather hits I found myself craving rice paper rolls. On a day which is 36°C and humid, the last thing I want is turn the oven or hot plates on. Which makes this recipe perfect. We’ve been eating these a lot. I generally prepare the filling and dipping sauce, put the dried rice papers on a plate and put out a bowl of warm water. Then Richard and I can sit there, soaking and filling our …

Fruit & vegetables in season in March
Posted by kathryn in Summer
Yikes, I’m so behind with my blogging that I’ve forgotten my monthly what’s-in-season list. It may be the middle of the March, but here’s my list of the in-season fruit and vegetables in Sydney at the moment. We’re into autumn, so they types of fruit and veg available are gradually starting to shift. Stone fruit and berries are going out of season this month, which will be reflected in sharp price increases. While the new season apples, pears and nashis …

In the meantime I have some gift ideas/suggestions for you: h3. And the Love is Free Jules Clancy from Stonesoup self-published her first book earlier in the year. Indian-style Scrambled Eggs
Posted by kathryn in Breakfast, Summer, Vegetables and Eggs
This is my current favourite breakfast – Indian-style scrambled eggs on toast. It’s something I’ve gradually adapted from a Madhur Jaffrey recipe. Step-by-step making it a little easier and a little more suited to my tastes. If I get up early to exercise, this is what I have when I get back. It fills me up, keeps me going until lunch-time, while also providing lots of good, dense nutrition. The original recipe has a few more processes and ingredients, …

Merry, merry Christmas to you all. Have a gorgeous, relaxing festive season and best wishes for good health and happiness in 2011. Thank you for being such great readers, especially as I’ve been a sporadic blogger this year. Your comments, emails and suggestions have been wonderful to read and immensely appreciated over the last year. I’ll be taking a few weeks break from both work and blogging and will be back towards the end of January. Happy holidays.
Healthy Cooking Seminars

Those of you in Sydney might be interested to know I’m running some more Healthy Cooking Seminars at clinic. I have two scheduled: h3. 1. Easy & Tasty Vegetarian Cooking On this Saturday, there are still a few places left. Having a couple of meat-free meals each week is a good strategy for your health. The trick to introducing more vegetarian meals is knowing what to cook, how to make a balanced meal and how to ensure it tastes delicious. …
Four recipes that intrigue me
Posted by kathryn in Baking, Salads, Summer and Vegan
I’ve seen a lot of fabulous recipes online recently, but these four have particularly stayed with me. They’re all simple, but intriguing. Tasty looking and really interesting ways of using ingredients. So I thought I’d share them with you: # Tomato and pomegranate molasses salad: Lucy posted this Sam and Sam Clark recipe recently and it’s absolutely outstanding. I made it with some cherry tomatoes and the flavours were divine. It’s rich, sharp and yet also sweet. The leftovers were …
Summer recipes for my northern hemisphere readers
Posted by kathryn in Summer
I realise that all this talk of soup in the last few weeks rather excludes my northern hemisphere readers. For those of you in the middle of summer I’m sure the last thing you want to think about is a hearty bowl of soup. So I thought I’d put together a list of the warmer weather recipes I’ve noticed recently: * Healthy Scrambled Eggs: first up is this lovely zucchini speckled scrambled eggs from Sophie of Mostly Eating. As …
Tomato, avocado & chickpea pasta
Posted by kathryn in Dinners, Spring, Summer and Vegan
A few weeks ago, I was talking pasta – why it isn’t as bad for you as people think, plus five lovely looking recipes I’d seen recently. Well today I have an actual pasta recipe for you. When tomatoes and avocadoes are in season, this is the meal I turn to when home alone. It’s easy, makes little washing up and the sauce can be prepared while the pasta is cooking. I often make changes around the edges, adding …
Cooking for one
Posted by kathryn in Summer and An Honest Kitchen
Today Lucy and I are very excited to be releasing the latest issue of An Honest Kitchen – Cooking for One. We’ve spent the last few months talking food, testing, re-testing, photographing, writing, trying out some new things and giving the magazine a fresh new look. Cooking for One is compact edition, with a summer focus. Rather than over-loading you with stacks of new food, we’re focusing on three healthy, tasty and, of course, delicious recipes. Three recipes, which …

Making new year resolutions - thoughts, ideas and my process
Posted by kathryn in Summer
I’ve been thinking a lot about new year resolutions recently – after all it’s that time of year. While I’ve noticed more and more articles and people poo-pooing the idea of new year resolutions, I actually like them. While I realise many people break their resolutions quickly and most don’t last beyond January, I think that’s a problem with how we make new year resolutions, rather than with the concept itself. Most resolutions have a big picture focus and …
