Citrus and The Everyday Kitchen
Posted by kathryn in Blogging and Fruit

Today I have a question and also some news.
Citrus
I’ve just moved into a suburb, where almost every house has a citrus tree. In my garden there is a glorious, large lime tree. When we moved in it was laden with fruit and I’ve been frantically preserving, marmalading, making pickle, squeezing into salad dressings and giving away to friends. Over the last two weeks it’s come alive with new flowers and these blossoms, as I have discovered, smell absolutely divine.
I already love this tree. Moroever as I walk along my street I spy lemons, cumquat, mandarins, oranges – all fruiting like crazy.
However this morning I heard the new head of the Royal Botanic Gardens speaking on the radio. He said that Australia has more native citrus species than any other country in the world.
While I’ve heard of finger limes and desert limes, I really had no idea there were so manys. And I’ve been wondering ever since – why aren’t more of us growing native citrus?
I’d love to hear if any of you have experience with native citrus, either here in Australia, or anywhere else in the world.
The Everyday Kitchen
This week I’ve started blogging for Reader’s Digest. The Everyday Kitchen blog is available on their Australian, New Zealand and South African websites. Some of the material will focus on these three countries, but much of it will be relevant to all.
As with Limes and Lycopene, on The Everyday Kitchen I’ll be blogging about healthy eating, seasonal ingredients and how to eat well in a busy life. However on The Everyday Kitchen I’ll be posting more frequent and shorter pieces – nuggets of information, resources and ideas.
I will of course still be here at Limes and Lycopene. I love this blog and all you gorgeous readers, so have no plans to disappear.
I’d love to know what you think about The Everyday Kitchen and feel free to join in the conversation over on the Reader’s Digest site.
Update: In response to Johanna’s question in the comments, I’ve checked and there will be an RSS feed for The Everyday Kitchen, it just isn’t set up yet. I’ll put up a post with the link when it’s ready. Also on TEK comments are being moderated, so they won’t appear immediately. Thanks to all of you who’ve visited the new blog and left comments – it’s much appreciated.

Great news, more Kathryn to read! :)
Well, I already knew about your citrus tree but The Everyday Kitchen is surprising and welcome news. How wonderful! I read your first post on creative, tasty ways of using leftovers. Thought it was brilliant. And written in your trademark style which is delightful to read.
Looking forward to future information nuggets & recipes as well as reports on the progress of your lime trees.
Hello, again. Just back from The Everyday Kitchen where I read your “Changing Seasons” post & I’ve left a comment there. (I hope I won’t make you blush if I compliment you on your beautiful profile photo.)
Well thank you all – your enthusiasm is very kind and generous. I’m really pleased to be doing a bit of “pro” blogging.
Had a look at your new blog – seems interesting but I tried to subscribe it to my feedreader and it seemed to just subscribe me to all the readers digest posts – will try and keep an eye on it but if you have any ideas about subscribing to a feed reader I would be interested to hear
Hi there Johanna, I noticed that today. I’ll have a chat with RD and let you know.
