Is middle-aged weight gain inevitable?
Posted by kathryn in Myths
There’s a great piece on the ABC’s website about middle-aged weight gain. A lot of people think it’s inevitable. There seems to be a widely held belief that as you age there’s a dramatic slowing of the metabolism, which means no matter how hard you try weight gain is going to happen.
But this is not really true. There is a slowing of the metabolism as people age, but it’s relatively slight. What’s more significant in the development of middle-aged spread, is the drop in activity which occurs as we age and our lifestyle changes.
It’s a really well explained article and I’d encourage you to take a look Fact Buster: is the middle-aged spread inevitable?.

My weight hasn’t changed all that much, but I don’t have much of a waist anymore. Doesn’t seem to matter what I do. All the muscle and fat seems to be moving around and settling in different places. Blah!
This is a really good article Kathryn.
So often people put weight on as they get a bit older and it can be upsetting when you haven’t changed what you are eating at all. When you look back it’s often those changes in activity levels that make the big difference.
Great article and makes so much sense. One of the most sensible eaters I’ve ever known, not in terms of what he eats but in terms of accurate caloric intake, is my father. It’s fascinated me over the years watching his eating taper off as he ages, and that article sort of makes it all make sense now!
