Some thoughts on fructose

Posted by kathryn in Nutrition and Myths

I’ve been asked a lot of questions recently about fructose. The comments and threads have been overwhelmingly negative. While the questions vary, they all centre around the same core issue – is fructose bad for you? In short the answer is an annoyingly cryptic – probably yes, but not really at the moment . . . as is ever the case with nutrition. h3. Problems with the research Fructose is a type of sugar. It’s a very simple sugar, called …

  • Lamb, cauliflower and spices: Interesting looking Middle Eastern inspired dish with no name from Spice and More_. There’s eggplant, pine nuts, some lovely spices and a good idea for including cauliflower – especially if it’s not your favourite veg. * Ethics in advertising: There’s been a fair bit of criticism PETA and one of their advertising campaigns recently. Here’s a piece from Rudd Sound Bites, Yoni Freehoff’s perspective at Weighty Matters and PETA’s response at The Huffington Post269353.html. * …

Spring changes at Limes & Lycopene

Posted by kathryn in Blogging

Limes & Lycopene has been well over-due for a spring clean. Launched with the current look and feel, and software about three years ago, it’s been slightly neglected since then – no upgrades or proper site work. However, over the last couple of weeks Richard and I have been making some changes. Much of the work has been below the surface. Stuff to make Richard’s maintenance of and my posting on the site easier. However, as you’ll see if you’re …

Fairtrade, ethics and the big food companies

Posted by kathryn in Ethics & Sustainablity

Some of the big food companies are getting into Fairtrade. Cadbury UK have announced that every Dairy Milk bar will be made from Fairtrade chocolate. While McDonald’s and Starbucks have started using Fairtrade coffee. Yesterday’s Guardian asks the question – should we celebrate? bq. The ethics were pretty simple in the early days of Fairtrade. It was a rebel brand; every penny spent was an easy poke in the eye for capitalism and that nasty, greedy Man. But, just as …

Cooking for one . . . or two

Posted by kathryn in Miscellanea

Another seminar for the Sydney-siders . . . If there’s just one or two of you at home, it can feel hard to get motivated to cook a proper meal in the evening. Instead many people fall back on take-away or toast. However no matter the size of your family, eating good food is fundamental to your health and wellbeing. And it’s possible to make it easier. In October and November I’ll be running some seminars on _Cooking for …

It’s called double broccoli quinoa and features a pesto made of . . . broccoli. * Experimenting with flax: On the Bitten blog Cory Ramey has been experimenting with using flaxseed as an egg substitute. This is something I’ve read about on many vegan blogs, but it’s interesting to hear the results from a non-vegan. * Smart Choices? In the US there’s a new …

Caffeine: what, when, how much?

Posted by kathryn in Myths

Most of my clients worry about how much caffeine they drink. But they’re usually even more anxious I might take their coffee away from them! I’m not a particularly puritanical practitioner. If you really enjoy something and get pleasure from a food or drink then there’s generally a place for it in your diet. You might need to address how much and how often, but there’s rarely a need to forbid foods. And the same goes for coffee. But …

Why I encourage clients to eat less chicken

Posted by kathryn in Meat and Nutrition

I’m a bit anti-chicken. I know it’s popular and for many people the meat they most commonly eat. Chicken is not a terrible food. However, while it’s low-ish in fat and contains a good amount of protein, I don’t think chicken has a lot else going for it. The average Australian eats about 36kg of chicken per year. This means chicken rivals beef (and beats both lamb and pork) in the list of most popular meats. It was in …
