What I'm eating

  • My current snacking obsession is dried figs.
  • Monday. Breakfats: tweaked the scrambled eggs. Mixed through harissa, oven roasted pumpkin and fresh parsley.
  • Saturday. Richard is making pizza. He bought the pizza dough from the local pizza parlour, but is doing the rest himself.
  • Saturday. Pine mushrooms (like these http://ow.ly/1iyxs ) and Swiss browns on toast.
  • Friday. Breakfast: Indian-style scrambled eggs on toast. Yes, I'm still not bored of it. http://ow.ly/1hmdt

How I make baked potatoes

Posted by kathryn in Dinners

As we move into autumn I find myself wanting baked potatoes more and more. Potatoes, in their skins (or jackets) cooked in the oven until fluffy and soft in the middle are one of my favourite cooler weather foods. I see nothing wrong with eating potatoes. Whatever the low-carb enthusiasts tell you, there is nothing inherently wrong with the simple spud. Eat too many of them and they can stack up the kilojoules. But then that’s true of many …

  • Noodles & edamames: Lovely Japanese inspired salad from Yotam Ottolenghi. Glass noodles and edamame beans are combined with fresh herbs, chilli, sesame seeds and a ginger, lime and soy dressing. * The food we buy now: Interesting piece about changes to the UK’s average ‘basket of goods’ used in inflation calculations. Charts our changing food tastes and habits. What’s in your basket? * Spinach & okra soup: Over here, okra is currently in season. I love the stuff …

A community in my kitchen

Posted by kathryn in Blogging

Today I am delighted to have a guest post for you. From the lovely Elaine of Greens & Berries. Over to you Elaine . . . In late November 2008, Kathryn asked me to write a guest post for her 31-days series. (Thank you for being so patient, Kathryn.) Perhaps procrastinating for more than three months had one benefit: more time for hands-on, taste-tested food experiences that have affirmed my belief that the key practice that helps me eat healthfully, …

  • Cooking pasta: Harold McGee has done some experiments. To find out how much water you actually need to cook pasta. And it’s not as much as you think. * Pasta bake: I cooked Heidi’s almost cheeseless pasta bake this week and it’s really, really good. Next time I’d also add some broccoli to the mix. * Stuffing a roast: I really liked Mark Bittman’s easy idea for stuffing a roast. He just sticks a wooden spoon in and …

Snacks I'm eating at the moment, well 3 of them anyway

Posted by kathryn in Snacks

Since fracturing my foot I’ve had to adjust my work practices. The days I’m at home are fine. However, getting to and from clinic is more tricky. Therefore over the last few weeks I’ve changed my clinic times. Rather than the usual 3 – 4 days, I’m instead seeing clients just twice a week. While I’m working fewer days, fitting my clients in has made those two days longer, with shorter breaks. The need to manage my energy levels …

Yes I am back. It’s been a long time between posts, hasn’t it?. Much longer than the expected seven to ten days. I’m sorry to have been silent for such a long time. But the trifecta of fractured foot, moving house and being without internet connection for three weeks . . . well it somewhat defeated me. On the bright side we are loving our new house. The foot is on it’s way and I’ve had plenty of rest …
