Quicklinks - the Christmas edition

Posted by kathryn in Miscellanea

  • Is Santa naughty or nice? A bit of headline grabbing, tongue-in-cheek research from Australia this week, asking if Santa is a good health role model?. He’s overweight, eats an awful lot of cookies and milk on Christmas eve, drinks and drives and has never been seen wearing a seat-belt.
  • Edible gifts: If you’re still after low cost and interesting Christmas gifts, then take a look at Fern’s DIY garden inspired gift ideas from Life on the Balcony. Thanks to Elaine for pointing me to this lovely blog
  • Recipes in a jar: Another Christmas idea, this one found through the Life on the Balcony article – recipes in a jar.
  • Women and alcohol: Research from the UK talks about the amount of alcohol drunk by higher paid, educated women. From The Times: "The researchers claim that society’s desire to dwell on young people’s public excesses also acts as a diversion, consolidating middle-class, middle-aged drinking as “comparatively civilised and unproblematic”.
  • Reviewing the first decade of the century: There’s an interesting food review of the last 10 years on the Guardian’s site. It’s UK focussed, although there’s still some meaty thoughts in there for the rest of us.

Menu for Hope update

As of this morning Menu for Hope had topped US$15,000. A great effort. Remember that tickets are only on sale up to Christmas Day – so buy them now.

Lucy and I are offering two one year subscriptions to our eMagazine An Honest Kitchen. Plus there’s a full list of the fabulous prizes at Chez Pim.

Arwen from Hoglet K 20 December, 2009

I like the look of the recipes in a jar. They’re pretty as well as practical. Making your own massage oil is an interesting one too.

kathryn 20 December, 2009

The recipes in the jar are great aren’t they Arwen – really pretty as well. This year for friends and colleagues, I’ve made bags of preserved lemons and Moroccan spice mix then wrapped these up with a recipe. We had our Christmas party on Saturday night and I hung the gifts around the garden – the aroma from the spices was magical.

Elaine 21 December, 2009

I love to give and receive edible gifts, too, especially when they’re handmade. You treated your friends and colleagues very well, Kathyrn — such beautiful gifts. And what a creative and aromatic way to decorate your garden. Hmmmm, I can see some advantages to celebrating Christmas in the summer.

Thanks again for the links. I’m afraid I’m a bit caught up in last-minutes Christmas preparations but I will check out the new-to-me links. I’m especially curious to read the Guardian article.

kathryn 21 December, 2009

I totally understand the last-minute Christmas preparations Elaine – I’m the same. Have four more work items on my to-do list, but there are quite a few more personal items on there.
