  • Home squeezed oranges: When your orange juice carton claims it’s home squeezed you have to think twice. Interesting article on how food manufacturers are trying to tap into the locavore movement.
  • Asparagus salad: Oh my. Just look at the salad on Stonesoup – asparagus, mozzarella, capers, buckets of herbs. I can’t think of many more heavenly ideas.
  • Falafels: For weeks now I’ve been craving good falafels. Moist, full of herbs and with a crunchy outside coating. Thank you, oh thank you Helen for posting your oven baked version. I shall be making them this weekend.
  • US Food Policy: This week Michael Pollan publised an open letter to the new US President. It’s all about food policy and how to make US agriculture more sustainable.
  • What consumers buy: From Mark Bittman’s blog a comparison of US consumer expenditure on soft drinks and candy vs fresh produce. I haven’t checked the figures, but can this really be true?
  • Eating on US$25 a week: After this week’s $7 dinner challenge it’s interesting to read about Cheap Healthy Good’s attempts to compile a weekly menu with only US$25. Showing just how difficult it can be to make healthy, interesting food on a budget.

I always love your links. Today I have read an article from Sc American that says that in the US, 2 million plastic bottles are discarded every 5 minutes! Your link to the comparison between candy, softdrinks etc and fresh food seems to reinforce this.

Vegeyum, 2 million plastic bottles every five minutes? That’s a frightening amount. You wouldn’t think that could possibly be true – except Scientific American is such a reputable source. I can’t quite get my head around that figure.

have you tried Jasmin in Punchbowl to satisfy your Felafel cravings? They are the best in Sydney i’ve found so far. Yummba http://www.yummba.com.au in Bondi Junction Westfields food court cook them up freshly as well and usually do the trick in that area after a shopping spree.

Simon :-)

Simon – it’s reading about Jasmin and Sabbaba (Bondi) in the latest Good Food Guide which started my falafel cravings! Just haven’t been able to get out to either area yet. Although I’m hopefully going to Sculpture By the Sea next weekend – which will definitely coincide with a Sabbaba trip. Not sure if you’ve been there, but the falafels are a-mazing!

hi kathryn, i haven’t read the lastest Good Food Guide but Sabbaba sounds interesting. actually i’m now very tempted to check it out today for a late lunch. i did come across a felafel place close to Beach Road Hotel on Glenayr Rd about 6 months ago but forgot the name which is very close to Sabbaba location unless it’s the same place and might have moved. they cooked them freshly as well. Abduls at 563 Elizabeth St Surry Hills also make a pretty filling and cheap falafel roll too. S :-)

oooh! I am so glad you liked the falafel recipe Kathryn. I would try adding a tablespoon of tahini if I made them again so you might want to bear that in mind.
