An old remedy: lemon juice in water

Posted by kathryn in Uncategorized

The next question in Q & A Thursday is about lemon juice in the morning.

What do you think of half a squeezed lemon in hot/boiling water in the morning? I have been doing this as opposed to my morning coffee.

This is an old naturopathic remedy. Most detoxes include it and a lot of practitioners recommend this combination to aid liver and digestion.

While I don’t promote detoxes, I do have clients who swear by it and I sporadically recommend this remedy to people.

However there’s no concrete evidence for this action. If it does help the liver and digestion, the impact will be small.

But I still like the idea of starting the day with a drink. A cup of lemon juice and water, or some herbal tea. A small morning ritual that provides some hydration. But more importantly a moments pause before launching into the day.

What is Q & A Thursday?

This post is part of Q & A Thursday – a monthly burst of blogging, where you get to dictate the subject matter. Q & A Thursday is all about simple, practical answers to food and diet dilemmas sent in by readers.

I don’t know much about the effectiveness of drinking hot lemon drinks daily, however my childhood GP who I saw again recently for a nasty cold explained why lemon /citrus drinks are soothing for a sore throat when compared to water. The citric acid (whether it be lemon, orange, pineapple etc) stimulates the salivary glands which is more lubricating and thus more soothing on the sore throat than plain water.

Not entirely relevant, but I thought it was interesting :)

About a month ago I went off caffeine and I started having a lemon and honey tea first thing in the morning. I don’t know if it’s the lack of caffeine or the lemon but I feel pretty good. =)

I start my day with a cup of decaf green tea. Herbal, caffeine free and full of antioxidants! A TV nutritionist here recommends lemon squeezed into hot water to aid flushing out the digestive system in the morning.

Some detoxification programs include lemon, but I think not all of us will have the same results with lemon. Maybe for some, it will work and for others, not.
