Jamie Oliver's Eat to Save Your Life
Posted by kathryn in Myths
For the readers here in Australia – tonight Channel 10 is showing Jamie Oliver’s programme Eat to Save Your Life.
It’s all about what junk food does to your health. It looks at the history and evolution of mass produced, processed foodstuffs and exactly what this food does to your body. It’s a hard-hitting programme, aimed at shocking people into improving their diet.
But as well as the negatives, it promises simple and easy steps you can take to improve what you eat. And your health in general.
Sounds like compulsory viewing to me.
- Eat to Save Your Life
- Wednesday July 16
- 9.30 – 10.30pm
- Channel 10
I’d love to know if you watched the programme and what you thought.
Just to clarify – this is not Jamie Oliver’s website.
Hi there. My name is Kathryn Elliott and I’m a nutritionist and health writer in Australia. You’ve reached my blog – Limes & Lycopene – where I comment and write all about food, health and how to eat well when you’re busy.
The buzz about Jamie’s show is big and I’m really interested to know what you thought?
However if you’re looking for the man himself – he can be found here.
If you’d like to know more about Limes & Lycopene then take a look at these posts:
- Why I eat well
- How to change your diet
- 31 Days to Better Energy
- How to get five serves of vegetables
- One pot meals: Greek ‘chicken’

I am looking forward to this program…Our kids have loved all of Jamie’s work, but on this program we want to give it a quick review first…it could be a little too confronting for them.
But if it is suitable, I am sure it will be very useful to help teach the importance of “you are what you eat”. Many of his other programs have been great for kids (School dinners, Jamie@Home etc), so maybe this will be less shocking than the Ad’s claim…either that, or we cut out the unsuitable bits.
Thanks for the the reminder, Kathryn.
Also the Organic Expo is on in Sydney this weekend:

G’day Kathryn,
I Love your commitment to this issue. Thanks for stopping by my blog.
I am naturally cynical of the ‘food as medicine’ approach to diet apart from our collective common sense understanding that has been passed on through generation to generation.
What I am passionate about & hopefully communicate effectively is my commitemnt to eating locally & seasonally. I know its starting to lose its lustre as a message these days but I sincerely believe it to be part of our salvation in the food crisis we will all face in our immineant future. Not to sound too doom & gloom though, we all (me too!) need some intellectual diversions from time to time.
hi i was unable to watch all of this prgram and am wandering if i am able to get a copy from anywahere on dvd i would luv to have it thanx hope someone can help
I thought it was great. I’ve watched Gunther Von Hagen’s shows on another channel and he creeps me out, but has a fantastic way of explaining and showing us how wonderful our body can be. It really shocked me to see this 25 stone mans insides. So much fat. His lung were smaller than mine when I was 9mths pregnant and I know how hard that was to breath. Just comparing his organs to a healthy person, Wow. All the tests they did on the people made me think. I need to get me and my husband to do something real soon. I used to be under weight most of my life, I got to a healthy weight in my late twenties and maintained it until I had kids. I know now that I’m obese a thing that I never thought I would be. Jamie is right it doesn’t really take that much time to cook a healthy meal these days, there is so much pre-prepared food available that is still healthy. I don’t know what all the fuss was about. Would really appreciate it if they could repeat it over the weekend so that my husband could see it. He is carrying quite a lot of weight around his tummy and I want him to see the disection and the MRI process. It has definitely helped me to make that move to better health.
Oh I just love Jamie Oliver and that sounds like a great program. I’ll have to see where I can find it in the US.
I watched this tonight and was blown away. My overweight husband really needs to see this. Can anyone tell me where I can source a copy?
I’ve been busy trying to find out Chris. Try Jamie’s own Website or maybe his Myspace. Channel 10’s website is useless. I will let you know if I find anything and can you let me know if you find anything?
Seeing those cadavers was a real eye opener!! Even though I was flicking between this and the tour de france coverage, some of the key messages I took away were: (i) the need to chew your food more that three times before swallowing; (ii) how just a little snack, a little extra something, each day adds up over time; (iii) avoid hidden salt and sugar by cutting right down (or even eliminating) highly processed food; the importance of fitness (regular exercise) over fatness… we all have different body shapes – slim isn’t always best BUT being active every day is!
I missed it, but heard great reviews. Can you tell me whether it can be downloaded or purchased on dvd?
it really dose open your eyes, my mum had to work and she didn’t get to see this i think it would be good for her to see it… she wanted to see it wear can i find this or bye it either way??
thanks
Great show, has made me think seriously now of changing my eating style completely, and becoming healthy again.
Many thanks to Jamie for having the courage to present such a show!
Will you be airing the show again soon?
Regards
Colette
Just rang channel 10 and they have had so much positive feed back, but have no confimation that they will repeat it anytime soon. She told me probably later this year and also a DVD of it will be released later this year. Hope that helps a little. I suggested that they repeat it on a weekend, because that’s the only time my husband will get to see it. Crossing fingers that enough people ring them and they repeat it sooner.
Ever since I saw the preview for the show a few weeks ago, I’ve wanted to watch it, and now that I have, I’m very pleased that I have.
I’ve recently taken interest in what I should be eating, and it was great to have confirmation on what I’ve been doing is along the right line. I’m on this new healthy eating habit in bid to lose weight, however it encouraged me to keep going even though I am not seeing significant physical result yet, knowing what good it is doing inside my body.
Thanks all for your comments. Overall I think it was a really interesting programme, and possibly even a very important one. Really drove home the message of what this food does to your body. Plus I’m sure many people could relate to somebody in the group. But over weight, slim, active or not, male of female all were affected by the rubbish they were eating.
I’m really interested to know how well you thought the programme explained the what and how side of changing your diet. Did you take anything away that you are actually going to apply to your life today / this week?
Hello Jamie Oliver,
I love your cooking shows on what you like to cook & was very interested in the show of eat to save your life but the ending was just disgusting but it has made me think about what I should & shouldn’t eat etc. Keep up the fantastic work you do & I love it.
Cheers Heidi x
I thought it was a fantastic show!
I follow a healthy diet and maintain a regular exercise schedule but my parter has a love affair with dim sims, meat pies and pizza. After watching the show with me last night he was horrified at what he puts into his body and the long term affect it will have. He just called me to tell me that instead of the meat pie and coke he wanted for lunch, he chose a wholegrain chicken and salad sandwich with a bottle of water. I just hope everyone who has been touched by this program will keep up the work and that Jamie’s message is a long lived one.
For me, I was amazed with the impact 1 or 2 naughty choices per day could make over a long period of time. Everything really mounts up.
It hit the spot with emotion, compasion and the hard facts.
Just to clarify – this is not Jamie Oliver’s website.

I loved the show Kathryn, absolutely loved it and hope they will repeat it. I also recommend Von Hagens’ other series – Anatomy For Beginners – the graphic visuals really pack a punch with me. It’s that old analogy of striving to put the best fuel in your body for optimal performance. And Jamie is a legend. I love the direction he is taking, much more than just a cooking show. Next week battery hens – yay.
Thing is, it was on too late, I reckon. Preaching to the converted perhaps? Though it was ideal to put it on after all that dancing, I can tell you. I guess the body bits were a little confronting…thus its later time slot.
I loved all of it that I saw. Especially Dr Gunter, The Slicer.
Jamie’s always been good value, but this recent incarnation (back to basics stuff) is the best work he’s done.
And the most amazing thing, to me, was that all of those people – ADULTS, mind you – were huge babies about vegetables. Really depressing. ‘Too long to cook’, ‘I hate veg’. Really?
Food for thought, indeed. Am working on a post at the ‘mo in my head based on the misconception that veg is complicated to cook and ’awful’ to eat.
I do find Dr Gunther a slightly disturbing man – loved the way they kept on filming him coming out of the shadows in “the crypt”.
Fiona – it is interesting the evangelical side of Jamie that’s coming out now. I wondered if he’d get burnt after the School Dinners experience – but he seems to keep on putting himself in the firing line.
Lucy – interesting point and I was just reading an article this week about adults behaving like children. It’s something I’m coming back to with clients more and more. You are in charge of what you put in your mouth. Only you. Nobody is forcing you, nobody is making you eat a certain way. It’s under your control. There’s so much “I can’t stop myself” and “I wanted it so I had it” going on. Which is smelling more and more like an abrogation of responsibility to me.
Very interested in your upcoming post. Let me know what you’re doing and I might bounce off you and do something allied on L&L?
Absolutely, Kathryn! Whose hand lifts the sausage roll to one’s mouth? Why, it’s ones OWN! Responsibility is not a dirty word.
You’re on. Great idea. Shall be in touch.
And yep. Dr Gunter was creeping around in the morgue air a little too, well, creepily for me. Did ya see the fat marbled through the large bloke’s muscles? Looked remarkably (and disturbingly) like that posh ‘Wagyu’ beef to me. Glad I love my veg, I can tell you…
Hi, was unable to watch the program and was wondering if it was possible to get a copy/dvd of last night’s show. Please contact me if you have any info!
I don’t know how anybody can live without their vegies. I know if I’ve had a lazy week and don’t eat enough fruit and veg I feel so stoggy. So there you go I’m an obese person that admitts it’s laziness and it is. But I’m working on it.
was unable to watch the program .has anyone got a coppy of last night show,
As someone who knows they are morbidly obese and quite terrified by the fact, this may really be the show to save my life. I have so much to live for including a gorgeous young daughter, but have developed such bad habits over many years.
Although the show had such an impact, I would have liked more information on the foods I really should be buying and eating, I felt that this was rather rushed and not enough time dedicated to how to make the changes.
Found a bit of the show on You Tube. Perhaps at some point, someone will upload the entire show.

hi,
i’m a brit who watched this when it showed ages ago on uk tv. thrilled to find that my other half (obese, hates veggies) has kept this to remind himself how bad things can be (ok, are). he hasn’t changed, however.
still i hope that it makes some people think. i certainly thought a lot about my own diet which i (hopefully?) think is better than his…
It is I think the one let down in the programme, that you’re not left with a strong sense of what to do and how to change your diet. Could have done with being a two-parter. One episode on the effects of eating badly and the second episode on how to eat well – and how those 18 people changed what they did.
I saw some of Jamie’s show and it was fabulous I am making some huge lifestyle changes to my family, I would love to know if I can get a copy of the show there was too much to take in all at once, and would like to show the kids so they understand why we are making these changes in our life. Thanks
I was also blown away buy this episode and want a rerun or copy of the show so my husband can see it for himself. I’ve been searching for the strong message that could really make an impact on him and I think I have found it . I could only rely on my memory of the show but it made such an impression on me I was able to relay the graphic images to my husband to the extent that he too became frightened of what could potentially be his fate also. I want to be able to drive the message home further so I am desperately waiting to get hold of this particular episode. thanks jamie you have got yourself a new fan!
My goodness you have been a busy lady this week Kathryn with all your very informative posts.
Yes I saw the show and it left me with mixed feelings. I thought some of the shock tactics and “in-your-face” consequences struck a chord in a very realistic way.
However I felt the show was a little disjointed and there were things said that were not explained. For instance Jamie was making a tomato sauce and said it had (to use one of your favourite words) “lycopene in it”. No further explanation, no what is lycopene and how it can be beneficial for the body or what foods contain it or anything. It was like just drop the name and that is enough. Apart from people reading your posts, I am sure lots of people don’t know about lycopene.
Also one of the younger participants stated she was lazy and just didn’t want to cook food herself. She was very honest to admit to that. So how did this show help her. I get the feeling she already knew it wasn’t good enough to eat processed foods and lots of takeaways and the show confirmed that with subsequent results. But how does this help her? She needs motivation, know-how, a plan, something to help teach her how to make better healthier food choices. It’s all good and well to say yep sure Im gonna change from tomorrow but what exactly are those changes going to be? And how can one manage these changes over a longer period of time. I dunno, just feeling slightly skeptical.
I have to agree on something with you mariana is that even know I did get a lot out of it I am too left with the feeling where to now.
Please send me detail how to receive this program.
Unless you can get something from the UK, channel 10 said that a repeat will be aired later in the year and a DVD would also be released later in the year. But as I said maybe if we all ring them they might repeat it sooner or release DVD sooner.
oh i’m so disappointed that i missed this! i was on a plane at the time of airing so will hunt down what i can on Youtube. sounds like it was fantastic. i’m a long time Jamie fan and i love he does … not only his recipes but his promotion of a positive relationship with food.
Hi Kathryn,
I’ve just read this post and happy to say I did my own little review of it last week after the show on my blog: http://august-street.blogspot.com/2008/07/low-gi-in-july-17-or-jamie-oliver-will.html (hint: I loved it!)
I’ve linked to your blog because I find it extremely interesting, and very useful in my quest to learning about a low GI lifestyle.
Cheers,
Jen.
I was also quite taken by the program. At over 100 Kg I’m in the overwieght group. hopefully being 6 foot 2 inches does not put me in the obese category… but I do know my waistline has a bit of extra fat… one of the parts his program hit an achord with me was about pies and sausage rolls – how they showed – years ago, they were good for you – i.e. have high meat content… but these days – to save cost – meat content dropped massively – and then filled up with cheap rubbish – very bad for you – I think he mentioned emulsifiers, and cheap fatty portions, and then extra salt to make up for no taste… Anyway, I regret not having recorded the program when I watched it…. I’ll grab a copy of it whenever it is available… I tried Amazon and every where – but guess we’ll need to wait until the whole current series ends, before it will come out on dvd
Mariana – you’ve echoed some of my thoughts exactly. I think a follow up programme would have been really useful and interesting. Following those 18 people as they tried to change their diets. The stuff that worked for them, the things they struggled with – and so on.
Jenaveve thanks for letting me know about your review.
And Martin I found the discussion of how our food has changed one of the most interestesting parts too. Cheaper cuts of meat, all the leftover bits, boosted up with sugar, salt and other rubbish.
Wow, good web site katherine and yes i loved “how to eat to save your life” i finshed work late so i missed the first half hour :(
I want it on DVD, im a nutrition student and sometimes its so hard to explain the problems associated with poor diet, jamie jusy nailed it. I want all my friends to see it, i know some missed out.
I work in the gym and i think it would be a great program to play on the tv’s in the gym
JAMIE on DVD :) !!! Please
As loads of people are trying to hunt down a copy of the show and I have been asked through my own website, I thought I would try and find a source.
There is a link here (http://rachelhenwood.wordpress.com/2008 … your-life/ ) for a website (based in Australia) that is selling both a VHS and DVD version of the show.
Hope that helps all those looking to watch it again or those who want to see what everyone has been talking about!
Best not to watch it over a dinner tray….
Rachel
i thought it was for shock value. there wasnt any really useful tips about HOW to change your habits. some more recipes and advise would have made it better, but as it was, the only thing i took away from it was that sausages have gotten worse in the last few decades. all the more reason for me to keep making all my own food.
