Posted by kathryn in Uncategorized

Time for a quick quiz I think. Which of the following foods contain carbohydrates?

  1. bread
  2. milk
  3. pumpkin
  4. lamb
  5. tofu
  6. broccoli
  7. apples
  8. olive oil
  9. butter
  10. salmon
  11. bananas
  12. rice
  13. hazelnuts
  14. chickpeas
  15. sultanas

Leave your thoughts in the comments below and I’ll post the answers later today.

I think the following contain carbohydrates (without cheating)
bread
pumpkin
tofu
broccoli
apples
bananas
rice
hazelnuts
chickpeas
sultanas

Fiona 16 April, 2008

I think all of them do!

Anita 16 April, 2008

I’m voting for:
bread
pumpkin
tofu
apples
olive oil
bananas
rice
hazelnuts
chickpeas
sultanas

Peta 16 April, 2008

I think they all might, but I’m not sure about the salmon, olive oil and butter.

Joanne 16 April, 2008

All of them except olive oil.

Milk and butter contain lactose, lamb and fish contain glycogen (not very much though!).

berry 16 April, 2008

all of them – except olive oil, fish and the meat?

lindsey clare 16 April, 2008

oh i feel so silly for not really knowing what a carbohydrate is! but i think they all have carbs in them except for lamb and salmon…?

Kevin Gianni 17 April, 2008

This is a fun one… let’s see if I get it right…

1. bread – yes. 2. milk – yes. lactose. 3. pumpkin – yup. 4. lamb – nope. 5. tofu – yep. 6. broccoli – yep. 7. apples – of course. 8. olive oil – no. 9. butter – yep, but not much. trace lactose again. 10. salmon – nope. 11. bananas – sure. 12. rice – yup. 13. hazelnuts – minimal. 14. chickpeas – yep 15. sultanas – yes.

Let me know how I score! :-)

Hmmmm, I reckon this is a trick question and that all of them contain some kind of carbohydrate. If it’s not a trick question then I’ll guess lamb, olive oil, salmon, butter and tofu don’t have carbs. :)

Erin 17 April, 2008

I think they all do, with the lowest amounts in the nuts, salmon, tofu, and lamb.

cookinpanda 17 April, 2008

All! Except olive oil. I think… This was tricky but I’m excited to find out the answers.

kathryn 17 April, 2008

Morning all – here are the answers:

  1. bread: yes – bread is about 45 percent carbohydrate
  2. milk: yes milk is about 5 percent carbohydrate, one of which is lactose. So if you’re lactose intolerant you are reacting to a carbohydrate.
  3. pumpkin: yes
  4. lamb: no – although this is a tricky one. When alive, animals do contain small amounts of carbohydrates in their muscle – called glycogen. But this is broken down during the slaughter and processing. So the lamb meat doesn’t contain carbohydrates.
  5. tofu: yes
  6. broccoli: yes – all vegetables contain carbohydrates, in varying quantities. Broccoli is 0.4 percent carbohydrate.
  7. apples: yes
  8. olive oil: no – while there are carbohydrates in olives, there are none in the extracted oil.
  9. butter: yes – it’s only 1 percent, but yes butter does contain carbohydrate
  10. salmon: no
  11. bananas: yes bananas are about 20 percent carbohydrate
  12. rice: yes
  13. hazelnuts: yes
  14. chickpeas: yes
  15. sultanas: yes

So they all contain carbohydrates except lamb, olive oil and salmon.

Well done to all of you. You got more right than when I’ve asked this question while running courses and lectures.

Next question I’m going to ask is about fibre . . .

Sophie 17 April, 2008

Now I didn’t take part because I knew I’d be really embarassed if I got one wrong. And i would have done as well – completely forgot about that little tiny bit in butter!

kathryn 18 April, 2008

Ah Sophie, your comment made me laugh – I can completely relate to that sentiment. The tiny 1% in butter is a tricky one – quite counter-intuitive.

lindsey clare 18 April, 2008

ooh. so i got them all right except for olive oil. very interesting!
