What's in season: Sydney in December

Posted by kathryn in Uncategorized

Summer produce is almost in full swing. Berries, cherries, peaches and nectarines are available and coming down in price. Asparagus is particularly good, as are eggplants at the moment.

Enjoy the beginnings of summer here in Sydney.

Fruit

  • Apricots
  • Bananas
  • Berries – the berry season is coming into full swing. I bought three punnets of strawberries for $5 last night. Raspberries and blueberries are also looking good. However, continuing rain in Victoria may affect prices and availability this month.
  • Cherries – Australian cherries are just coming into season, although they’re still a bit pricey.
  • Grapes – coming into season, although they’re still pricey.
  • Honeydew melon
  • Nectarines – both yellow and white are in abundance, so prices are coming right down.
  • Mango – the NT season is in full swing. However we won’t be getting super-cheap mangoes until the Qld season starts-up in January.
  • Oranges – valencias
  • Peaches – both yellow and white are in abundance, so prices are coming right down.
  • Pineapple – Bethongas are the best.
  • Rhubarb
  • Rockmelons – sweet, ripe and cheap
  • Watermelons

Vegetables

  • Asparagus
  • Avocadoes
  • Beans – improving in quality, should come down in price this month.
  • Capsicum – I’ve been purchasing big bags of red capsicum for use in salads – super-cheap.
  • Choko
  • Cucumber
  • Eggplant – the smaller Italian eggplants have also started appearing in shops.
  • Lettuce
  • Onion
  • Peas – including sugar snap and snowpeas
  • Radish – deliciously crisp at the moment.
  • Squash
  • Sweetcorn
  • Tomatoes – I’m finding cherry tomatoes particularly good at the moment. Plus the oxheart season has started.
  • Zucchini
  • Zucchini flowers

I had the first cherry tomato “harvest” from my garden yesterday – one single, tiny, but perfectly formed and delicious tomato. Hopefully I can manage to grow a few more . . .
