20.00 Dinner: Date Night – Italian restaurant

Richard and I have a weekly date night. We’ve been doing this for years. We go out to dinner and talk – about work, how we are and what’s been going on. In our otherwise busy life, it’s a time to re-connect and catch up.

  • 0.5 Italian salad
  • Gnocchi zagrese – with a tomato, mushroom, spinach and egg sauce
  • 2 glasses of red wine

What’s this?

This week on Limes & Lycopene I’m blogging about what I eata series of photos, showing what I’ve eaten the day before.

Let me know your reactions and comments – I’m intrigued to know what you think.

Hi Kathryn – I love your idea of a date night, that’s wonderful! It’s essential to have a special time like this with our partners to chat without any other distractions, unfortunately it seems like a rare think for some couples.

Melanie – date night has been a great thing for our relationship. Started out when we were both studying and working hard and not seeing a lot of each other. Little things were festering and getting blown out of proportion – so started having regular date nights. To re-connect and stop those molehills being turned into mountains!

The date nights are such a great idea (it’s so easy to forget to talk to each other – we’re terrible at sitting playing on our respective laptops of an evening).

The food looks lovely today (as in it is the kinds of things I would like to eat!). Healthy but not too austere – there are some sweet things in there like the breakfast bar and fun things to nibble on. I must try Cassie’s breakfast bar recipe – do you know if you can freeze portions of it (it sounds great for commuting days)?

Can I ask if you always have soy latte/cappucchino and what your decision making process is about choosing that over cows milk (i.e health reasons/ethics/taste)?

I did read yesterdays food too but didn’t have time to comment. I was thinking that I’d have been bit hungry by the evening meal yesterday, but today’s food is more spaced spaced out during the day (and I suspect there’s just a bit more of it!)

Very interesting reading – this is a great idea!

Love your good eating habits – actually they are a good inspiration to me, altho I had dosa and paneer pakoras tonight.

This is just so fascinating to see. Every time I do, I try to figure out in my head what I have eaten. And never, ever, is it as healthy as the meals you eat. Nor as planned out!

Cheers!

I find it interesting you haven’t had any bread. It is certainly a daily staple in our home and I can’t imagine a day without it. Also with your English background I thought for sure you would be drinking no less than 3 cups of tea a day. What about a piece of chocolate? Gosh Kathryn, the food so far looks amazingly healthy and for that I admire you. Is there anything a little sinful coming up?

Sophie – I haven’t tried freezing the breakfast bar. With my first batch, I wanted to see how long they stayed fresh. I might pop one in the freezer and report back in the next couple of days. I’ve found them a really useful food for quick breakfasts and snacks.

Re the coffee – I really don’t like the taste of cow’s milk, so I rarely consume it. On Wednesday I had cow’s milk on my cereal, because we have some leftover from a dinner party on Saturday night. But even then, I’ve mixed it in with rice milk to dilute the taste.

This was a long working day and I was out of home for most of the day – hence yes, the food was more spaced out.

Mariana – I am possibly the only British person in the world who doesn’t like tea. Can’t stand the stuff. Hate even the smell of it.

Regarding bread – I don’t eat a lot of it. Two reasons:

  • I tend to concentrate on getting enough protein, vegetables, fruit and use the starchy foods as fillers. I’m regularly having 3 – 4 cups of vegetables at lunch and dinner and find I don’t need so much of the starchy foods.
  • I find bread / starch in the middle of the day makes me fall asleep. After a starchy lunch, I’m useless and get no work done. So I tend to avoid it.

Having said that, there’s bread on Wednesday evening and I had some this morning.

Sinful? Yes almost certainly – I’m definitely not a nutritional saint. But I guess I try to limit these foods to the weekends, rather than every day.

i can’t believe you don’t like tea! i am shocked! ;)

that gnocchi looks so good. i love all your food so far!

kathryn 29 November, 2007

The gnocchi is a really good dish. I love the egg in the sauce.

Tea – yes I’ve never been able to drink it. I’ve tried. But I don’t mind a cup of herbal every now and then.
