What I'm eating

  • Lunch out today. Sandwich on soy and linseed bread at Sonoma. Fetta, leaves, red capsicum relish. And a coffee.
  • Tuesday. Mid morning snack = a banana and small handful cashews.
  • Tuesday breakfast: porridge with peanut butter & maple syrup. I'd forgotten how delicious this combination is.
  • Saturday. 5 cashews and a banana before heading off on a 45 minute walk
  • Friday lunch. Bits and pieces from the fridge. Couscous, white beans, lentils, cooked kale & onions, tahini dressing, rocket, green shallots

Diet strategies you can use to improve your mental health

While you may be aware diet is important for physical health, we rarely think about the impact of food on mental health. However, what you eat will affect the health of your brain.

We’re a long way from saying food definitely causes mental health problems. However, diet is an important part of treating mental health issues. By eating well and following a few simple diet guidelines, you can minimise your risk of mental health problems.

The diet guidelines for a healthy mind are very similar to the guidelines for a healthy body. Therefore a nutritious, balanced diet will feed your body and give you a good head-start on mental health.

Over the course of Mental Health Week I’m going to post five specific food and diet strategies you can use to nurture your mental health.

1. Eating Omega 3s will improve your mental health

2. Boost your brain with breakfast

3. How eating vegetables will help your mental health

4. Cut back on the grog, for your mental health

5. Manage your mood by managing your blood sugar levels
