BBC's online cancer resource
Posted by kathryn in Health News
I’ve been working away at an article on soy for Wellbeing magazine over the last few days. In the course of my research I came across a BBC resource called Cancer: the facts. It lists all the main types of cancer and then give some basic information on what it is, what the symptoms are, causes and treatments. Each page also shows links to news items pertaining to that particular cancer.
The treatment outline is the standard medical approach and there’s not a lot of information on prevention. However, it’s a useful introductory guide to different types of cancer.

I find the BBC cancer summary very limited to conventional treatment. It is like they are too scared they will offend anyone. Antioxidants have become one of the most contraversial treatments – one uptight dr on the ABC Health Report basically said they were deadly, so toxic you shouldn’t even flush them down the toilet, you needed to send them to the place of purchase to bey DESTROYED. Personally I’m getting a little sick of the pussyfooting. Yes, it is useful to know signs and symptoms, and if I had Hodgkins Lymphoma the stats are in my favour to have chemo – but so many of the rest are hit and miss. Fill them with weed killer and watch them die.
Jenna, you’re absolutely right, the BBC cancer reports are completely limited to conventional treatment – there’s practically nothing in there about lifestyle. But it’s a good first-stop to get independent information if you’ve been diagnosed with cancer.
I didn’t hear the Health Report you talked about, but the role of antioxidants in cancer prevention and treatment is still unconfirmed. While antioxidants are proving brilliant for preventing cardiovascular disease and macular degeneration, they only seem to be effective against some cancers, not all. There’s more information in my article Vegetables in failure to prevent cancer shock.
I’m a huge, HUGE advocate of diets high in fruit and vegetables. Most people simply don’t eat enough of these foods and people’s health would be so much better if they did. However, I also question the value of antioxidant supplements. Again, I’m going to point to a short piece of written – click here.
Our knowledge of cancer and effective treatments still has a long way to go.
