31 Days: tidy up your desk

Posted by kathryn in Work life integration

To start the new week, today’s task in 31 Days to Better Energy is to do some de-cluttering and tidy up your desk.

Why?

It’s Monday morning, the beginning of a new working week. However, have you arrived at work, only to feel your heart sink at the sight of your desk? If you’re in-tray is overflowing and your desk is covered in stuff, it can make you feel out of control and overwhelmed – especially if you’re already a bit stressed. It’s a sure-fire way to start the week feeling tired and over-it.

Today’s task

Today’s task is to begin the week with a cleaner desk and a clearer head. Take 15 minutes, to clear off your main work area and quickly organise your wor. As you’re tidying up, make a quick list of the things you have to accomplish today.

As soon as I’ve posted this, I’m going to spend 15 minutes on my desk – consolidating the post-it notes and scraps of paper, giving my work station a quick clean and filing away my invoices and receipts.

Sometimes, achieving even a simple goal can leave you feeling energised. Once you’ve finished your 15 minutes, take a few seconds to notice if you feel any different.

This post is part of a series I’m writing over August – 31 Days to Better Energy. For more information and to view the other tasks, take a look at the introductory post.

*Sigh. My desk was cluttered when I came into work this morning. Papers upon papers. Post-it notes. Client documents. Personal papers. What a mess. Instead of cleaning, I usually just go out for lunch and leave it until tomorrow. Besides Kathryn, who’s going to clean their desk? Inspire me!

Done. Was VERY much in need of tidying.

You know, I do feel more clear-headed.

I also felt more clear-headed after tidying my desk – my main workspace is empty, I have room to move and all those little scraps of paper and reminders are organised into one to-do list. It’s something I try to do every Monday. It’s a good way to start the week and wind yourself into working.
