31 Days: eat some fruit

Posted by kathryn in Seasonal Health and Fruit

I’ve talked about the importance of fruit before, on many occasions. It’s full of fibre, vitamins and antioxidants – all of which are important for your energy levels. However many people seem to just forget about it. Therefore, today’s task in 31 Days to Better Energy is to eat two pieces of fruit.

What fruit should you eat?

All fruit is good, so eat what you like. I don’t see any point in being a nutritional martyr and forcing down foods you can’t stand. If mandarins, apples and tinned pears are all you like, then start with them. If you can’t stand apples raw, but love them stewed, then make up a bit batch and put it in the fridge.

Today’s task

As I said, today’s task is to eat two pieces of fruit. Fresh, dried, cooked, tinned, frozen – doesn’t matter what form it takes, just fit two portions into your diet today.

  • slice some banana on your breakfast cereal
  • make a smoothie with frozen berries and fresh banana
  • snack on some dried apricots and sultanas
  • make some baked apples for dessert, stuff them with dried fruit and serve with natural yoghurt
  • make a pear, blue cheese, walnut and mixed leaf salad to go with your dinner
  • have tinned peaches with yoghurt for pudding
  • bake a batch of date and walnut muffins
  • make some ricotta pancakes for Sunday breakfast and serve them with fresh fruit
  • try a 10 minute berry and ricotta cake
  • or simply eat your fruit raw, savouring the flavour

If you feel adventurous, try something new, but make sure you eat two pieces of fruit today.

This post is part of a series I’m writing over August – 31 Days to Better Energy. For more information, take a look at the introductory post.

I really agree with this approach Kathryn – raw is great but if you can have your fruit in whatever enjoyable form you like then there’s just no excuse not to get stuck in!

i am one of those people who struggle with fruit! i like thw flavour of most fruits but i just don’t like the texture of bananas, and i find acidity a bit hard to take, so that cuts out a lot of fruits. until this year i only ever really ate apples, grapes and melon! boring!
but now i have a smoothie most morning, which is great cause i get my fruit intake without actually having to EAT fruit. and a smoothie can disguise all sorts of icky textures, hehe. at the moment we’re using lots of apples, mandarins and pears.

Jul – as with most nutritional things, eating fruit is all about making it easy and building habits. With clients I talk about storing your fruit in a visible place – it’s the benefit of having a fruit bowl in the kitchen, rather than putting everything away in the cupboard or fridge. These little strategies can make so much difference.

Sophie you’re right – it’s important just to have the fruit. No excuses!

Lindsey – a morning smoothie is an excellent way for the fruit-phobic to get their daily dose. It’s a good way of hiding both taste and texture. Apple, mandarin and pear smoothie combinations sounds wonderful.

And thank you so much Cynthia – that’s lovely feedback.
