31 Days: eat breakfast
Posted by kathryn in A Balanced Diet and Seasonal Health
Most people know that breakfast is important and yet there are still an amazing number of people who miss this meal. Your task therfore on day 3 of 31 Days to Better Energy is to have breakfast.
Why is breakfast important?
Many people find having breakfast tricky on weekdays. In the rush to get ready and get off to work, it’s one thing that gets missed. If this is you, then you’re starting your day off with an energy deficit, as breakfast kick starts our metabolism each day.
If you eat breakfast you will have more energy throughout the day. Moreover you’ll be able to concentrate better and you’ll be improving your long-term health by reducing your risk of diabetes, cardiovascular disease and obesity.
Today’s task
Therefore your task for today is to eat breakfast. I realise by the time you read this it might be beyond breakfast time. If it’s the morning and you haven’t eaten yet, go and get something NOW. If you did miss breakfast this morning, then make a plan to have it tomorrow.
Good breakfast choices include:
- wholegrain or sourdough toast with vegemite, or avocado and tomato
- natural muesli with milk and yoghurt
- English muffin with ricotta and jam
- raisin toast with banana and honey
- baked beans on toast
- miso soup and brown rice
- porridge with LSA (linseed, sunflower and almond meal) and fruit
- home-made smoothie with milk, yoghurt, banana and frozen berries
- poached egg with pan-fried spinach and tomato
- home-made muffin and a piece of fruit
There are more breakfast ideas in this post.
This post is part of a series I’m writing over August 2007 – 31 Days to Better Energy. For more information, take a look at the introductory post.

For some reason missing breakfast seems to be more of a peril for me on work from home days. I’m sitting here saying that I’ll have something in half an hour when I’ve answered a couple of emails…but this has been a good reminder, I’ll go get some breakfast now!
OK. I had a small bowl of Sultana Bran Crunch, some peach and mango yoghurt and a cup of coffee this morning. I decided for breakfast tomorrow I am going to have a poached egg with pan-fried English Spinach, shallots, red capsicum and pine nuts and some toasted sourdough on the side. The best part is we have beautiful happy free range chickens so the egg yolks are orange, not yellow and so tasty. I will hand pick the spinach fresh from ou vegie patch and I shall follow that up with an orange juice (usually 2 oranges) directly from our tree. I generally try to have a breakfast like this most weekends as it tastes so good and it makes me feel so healthy.
I know what you mean about working from home days Sophie. For me, it’s all about having a routine. On the days I work from home I get up, have a shower, get dressed, meditate for 15 minutes and then have breakfast, while having a quick look at the paper. Only after that do I switch on my computer. Otherwise, I find it’s just too easy to get caught up in the “I’ll just do one more thing” trap.
Your egg, spinach and pine nut breakfast sounds wonderful Marian. I like to mix breakfast up a bit on the weekend as well.
Plus, how wonderful to have spinach and oranges in your garden. I have some silverbeet plants and a lemon tree – but they’re still babies. However, I’ve also been growing mizzuna this year and it’s brilliant. A fast grower, loves being picked and really sparks up a salad or stir-fry.
