Fruit and veg in season: April in Sydney

Posted by kathryn in Autumn

April is here, while we’re still having beautiful weather, the mornings are getting more crisp. Autumn is upon us. So what fruit and veg are in season this month?

Fruit:

  • Apples (especially Jonathon, Royal Gala, Pink Ladies&Red Delicious)
  • Avocadoes (particularly Fuerte)

  • Fuji fruit
  • Grapes (although the main season is probably over)
  • Guava
  • Kiwifruit
  • Lemons
  • Limes
  • Mandarins (Imperial)
  • Melons (while they’re going out of season, I’m finding honeydews are still beautiful)
  • Nashi pears
  • Pears (especially Buerre Bosc&Williams)
  • Passionfruit
  • Persimmons
  • Pomegranates
  • Quinces
  • Tamarillos

Vegetables:

  • Asian greens (bok choy, gai lan, etc)
  • Beans
  • Broccoli
  • Brussels sprouts
  • Cabbages
  • Capsicums
  • Carrots
  • Daikon (white radish)
  • Fennel
  • Ginger
  • Leeks
  • Mushrooms
  • Okra
  • Peas
  • Potatoes
  • Pumpkins
  • Radish
  • Silverbeet

This post is exactly what I’ve been looking for! I try to focus meal planning on what’s in season, but many lists are not this extensive and unfortunately given availability of imported and stored produce, the shelves at Coles aren’t the best indication.

Thank you!

Hi there Cat, if you search through the archives, there are lists of what’s in season for every month of the year. So hopefully you’ll find these useful. And you’re right, you can’t rely on what’s in store to guide you on seasonality.

Many shops are now including labels on their fruit and veg displays showing what’s grown in Australia and what’s grown overseas. But this isn’t very consistent and produce can be grown in Australia and still travel a long way before getting to your plate.
