Gluten-free beer
Posted by kathryn in Gluten-free
I’ve just found out from a gluten-intolerant friend, that the first gluten-free beer is now available in Australia. It’s called O’Brien’s and is brewed by a gentleman called John O’Brien, who was himself diagnosed with coeliac’s in 1998.
They make four varieties – lager, brown ale, pale ale and a light. While O’Brien’s is not yet widely available, in Sydney can be found at- Blacktown Cellarbrations – 9621 2849
- Midway Cellars (Denistone East) – 9888 1354
- Duke of Edinburgh Hotel (Enmore) – 9519 1935
- Cumberland Country Club (Greystanes) – 9631 0688
- Manly Liquor Stop – 9977 7784
- Zanzibar (Newtown) – 9519 1511
- Kay Bee Hotel (Surry Hills) – 9212 1740
- Some Dan Murphy’s

This is great. I have a friend who is gluten-intolerant and she loves her beer… she will be excited to hear that she can drink it again!
I never realised how difficult it is to find gluten free products especially when eating out. My friend found a helpful website that allows her to find restaurants in her area serving gluten free meals. www.menulog.com.au is the site – other gluten-intolerant readers may find it useful!
Rach, welcome. I haven’t tried the beer yet, although I’m interested to do so and yes, the gluten intolerants in Australia are quite marginalised. While the the situation is improving, it’s slow. I regularly read a blog called Gluten-free Girl from the States and they seem to have so many more products available than here in Australia. It’s a great blog, Shauna writes beautifully and regularly posts recipes, so your friend might be interested?
Plus, thanks for the link to menulog – I haven’t seen that site before, but it’s really useful for gluten-intolerants, plus vegetarians, vegans, those wanting halal or kosher foods.
I do also post gluten-free recipes, if you take a look at the Gluten-free category in the sidebar.
Thanks again for dropping by.
